Grants: Statement of Aims

The Persian Heritage Foundation (PHF) is a U.S.-registered, non-political, non-governmental organization that aims to support and promote research on all aspects of the Persianate world in the pre-Islamic as well as the Islamic period—a world that is not confined to the present boundaries of Iran, but that extends to Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Indian Subcontinent and, more recently, the wider Iranian diaspora, involving a multitude of languages, religions and cultures.

Grant Deadlines

PHF accepts grant applications twice a year. Applications received prior to April 1 of each year will receive an official PHF response by mid-November of that same year. Applications received prior to October 1 will receive an official PHF response by mid-May of the following calendar year. 

Award of Grants 

Grants are awarded annually and evaluated by a committee of peers who convene, review the pool of  applications, and subsequently awards grants to approved applicants. 

Applicants should note:

  • PHF does not sponsor university tuition and/or fees, student living expenses, or PhD write-up​.
  • Grant recipients must have a bank account in the U.S.
  • Grant funds are paid to the grant recipient only and not to a third party.
  • Grants awarded will stay on PHF’s books for one year only and will not be carried over to the following year. Please only apply for a grant if you can finalize your project within the year the grant has been awarded.
  • Successful applicants will be required to submit a final technical and financial report that will be due 60 days after the end of the Award period.] Recipients of grants will be required to make formal and prominent acknowledgment of all support received from PHF. All publications resulting from research conducted with support from the PHF must acknowledge receipt of such support. The wording to be used is: This research was supported by funds from the Persian Heritage Foundation (PHF) Research Grants Program.

Grants for Lecture Series and Visiting Positions

PHF concomitant to its stated mission will consider applications to lecture series and visiting teaching positions involving any area of Iranian and Persianate studies. The amount of each grant will depend on the projected need and availability of funds.

Grants for Academic Research Activities

​PHF concomitant to its stated mission will consider applications to support academic projects, including conferences, concerned with any area of Iranian and Persianate studies. The subjects covered include art and archaeology, architecture, history and language, as well as the social sciences. Grants may be available for research, travel, organizing conferences and workshops, and presenting at such meetings. Multiple investigator projects will be considered, though only the principal investigator should apply. Grants may be in the range of $1,000 –10,000 USD.

The foundation will consider applications to support subventions for scholarly publication projects in the range of $1,000 – $5,000 USD.

Application Process

Applications for grants are open.  Please read the notes below carefully before completing the form.  Please also refer to the Terms and Conditions of the grant, click here.

References should be sent independently by referees.  Referees should be acquainted with the candidate and his/her work and in the case of scholarly research, should be senior academics.  References must be typed on the headed paper of the institution, and sent by email as PDF files directly from the referee’s official work email.  References emailed from personal or free accounts will not be accepted.  Members of the Board of Directors of PHF cannot be referees.
